this vacillating
finger bones ascending to the point of decision
only to cower once again. rescind commitment.

dreams hover above
out of reach
sizing you up
for the jump

time passes
you realize over a healthy glass of merlot
uncalculated temerity belonged to
a fecund old heart overrun with green

where you are now
is the vast middle
neither exuberant nor crestfallen

you twitch under the desert sun
as the numbness spreads
give in to your misgivings and
with a tired sigh, surrender
bigger hopes.
