“Daughters bring shame to the family by being born”
Gender inequality, is one of the main issues Pakistan faces in recent times. In previous years, gender inequality was there but it was not that evident as women themselves were not aware of their rights. As people (mostly women) started to raise their voices against our patriarchal society, women became familiar with their birthrights, which resulted in women standing up against misogyny and wanting equality.
Gender inequality is one thing I have always despised being an only daughter to my parents and also the eldest child. My brother is 2 years younger than I am. He is carefree, ignorant, recalcitrant and uninterested in studies.
He has always been pampered because he is a boy and he will represent our family name, and I, being a daughter will get married and have my husband’s name for the rest of my life. Although this thing may seem to be common in our Pakistani culture, it shakes a woman from her core.
My family will always keep my brother’s needs as their first priority even if he gives less or nothing in return. I am a university student now and I hold the second position in my class since the beginning. Now this a big thing because in Pakistan even if a girl is getting education, the main aim is to get her a degree and then getting her married and because they are told this before entering…
