When I first faced the discriminatory behaviors of others, I was 19 years old. Innocent and shy, I did not know the world’s harsh realities.
My family, especially my father, was very protective of me. My brothers, however, were not. I was hindered from interacting with anyone outside of our family circle.
But when my family moved to a bigger village where my grandfather, uncle, and cousins lived, everything changed. It was a new place, with new people and experiences waiting for me.
At first, the change was overwhelming. I felt like a fish out of water, trying to navigate this unfamiliar environment. But gradually, I started to adjust. I made new friends, learned new things, and discovered a world beyond the confines of my small village.
Living with my uncle’s family was a unique experience. My cousins were my age and treated me like one of their own, welcoming me with open arms. They introduced me to different foods, new music, and exciting ideas. It was eye-opening.
As a young girl in a small Pakistani village, I was fascinated by my cousins’ mobile phones and desired one of my own.
