How To Make A Long Road Trip More Doable
The art of breaking tasks down
My partner and I recently decided to go on a road trip in order to move our life to a different state. Because of time restrictions, we had one long day filled with a straight 14-hour drive planned.
The length of the trip made us both anxious, and we started to think maybe we had bitten off more than we could chew.
The day filled with this monumental task loomed ahead of us.
That’s when we realized that maybe we should tackle this goal in the same way we tackled the other big projects in our lives.
We opened up Google Maps and broke our journey down into two-hour driving increments. We also jotted down the exact locations and time frames of our breaks.
After we’d done that, we no longer had the looming 14-hour drive to complete. We had 7 different two-hour blocks of driving time to conquer and six different, planned rest stops where we could recharge for the next leg of the trip.
In this way, we also had more scope to feel accomplished by completing up to seven different milestones. Even if we realized that it was a safer option to cut the trip short, we could look back and feel good about the journey we had managed to make.
