The monster entered the meeting room, a clipboard in his giant hand. He grunted at the interviewee as he settled into his chair. He brought the clipboard close to his face. Brusquely, he began questioning her.

The young woman shot through each interview question, tripping over words here and there as she rapidly tried to prove herself worthy.

She replied with an emphatic “Yes, I can” to all of the monster’s questions.

She was nervous.

He noticed.

Yes, she could use a keyboard.

Yes, she could save a spreadsheet.

Yes, she thought quietly, within the safehouse of her mind, she could overlook the fact that her education had prepared her for a career much harder than squandering hours color-coding spreadsheets for the amount of money that would pay her barely enough to have a semblance of a life in this unjustifiably expensive city.

The monster seemed pleased with both her answers and her amenable performance. He took one final glance at her resume and nodded.

“I see you have accrued many skills. I think you might be a fit for this role,” he said, his voice a low rumble.
