Ahmed pushed the squeaky shopping cart toward a corral. The day was overcast. He glanced at the useless sleeves of his sweatshirt. The thing was too thin to keep him adequately warm.

October had arrived, and his mother was in full “wedding planner” mode for his upcoming winter wedding. He had never seen her quite this excited before.
