Silent No More: My Story of Speaking Out Against Sexism
I grew up in Pakistan, in a conservative society where discussions of sexism and misogyny were often restricted. Because these topics were seldom discussed openly, most people decided to turn a blind eye to mistreatment they witnessed.
As a result of little to no conversation about discrimination against women, I learned to accept the harsh reality of my life and ignore instances of injustice around me.
But then everything changed.
I had enrolled in evening classes at the University, and was excited and proud to begin this new educational journey. I was pursuing an MS in Clinical Psychology, and was eager to learn and grow.
The semester progressed, and I was completely engaged in my studies — busy with assignments and presentations. I spent most of my time at University working hard to complete the requirements of my degree.
My perspective on sexism changed after a moment of reckoning came in my life.
One day, while I was working on a clinical report with my friend, we lost track of time and she quickly had to head home. I still had some time to spare, and so decided to take advantage of it by checking my report with my professor.
