the starchy cream couch
for sitting in discomfort

silk with finely-stitched flowers
faux primrose garden- in this place
less of a house, more of a monument

its firmness pushed back against
the soft needs of a body, so
we settled on the brink

too polite to say
we were falling apart
each passing day.
