Saloni thought she escaped her past. But right when everything seems to fall into place, she is forced to face an old enemy.

New to the story? Start here

I looked out the window. The houses were more spread out in this part of the city, not like our neighborhood. I wondered what it must be like to have the added layer of privacy.

Mona was more than Riz’s sister to me. I had met her first. I was His guest at a party. As He guided my body to and from different groups, I felt her eyes watching us. I hadn’t known how much of a prop I had looked like until she told me, much later. She walked up to me with a bold stride and introduced herself, completely ignoring Him.

I immediately took a liking to her. Usually, people were swept off their feet by His limitless charm. She was different. She was talking to me. When He did try and take control of the conversation, Mona’s face showed her clear annoyance.

“She seems conniving,” he had told me once we got home that night. “I could feel her eyes just, like, digging into us.” He poured a glass of water and sat at the kitchen island. “You have to be careful of females like that. They’re jealous of what you have.”

I cringed. I hated it when He called women “females”. Reduced to their reproductive designation. Animals.
