The Hunted Part 1: My New Life

Saloni thought she escaped her past. But right when everything seems to fall into place, she is forced to face an old enemy.

“We’re running late,” Riz yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

“I know, I know! I’m trying to move as fast as I can,” I responded.

Quickly, I brushed the remaining knots out of my hair as I dabbed my lips together, trying to spread out the uneven lipstick. I wouldn’t have time to get any fancier than this. I parted my hair to the side with one finger and straightened out my dress.

“Good enough,” I said to the mirror, as I banged the bathroom light shut and rushed down the stairs.

Riz was at the bottom, hiding his impatience under a pursed smile. “Ready?”

“Yes!” I responded emphatically. Then, “Have you grabbed the present?”

“Ah, I forgot. Where is it again?” he groaned.

“Kitchen.”

I used the wall to balance myself as I slipped on my shoes.

Riz rushed back to the foyer. “It takes thirty minutes to get there. Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go,” he repeated theatrically.

The black letters from the car’s clock read 8:27. “We are so late,” I said, screwing in the backs of my earrings. I took a deep breath after I was done…
