I walked toward them, understanding why he had sent me the messages.

“Hi Trevor.” I greeted him with syrupy enthusiasm.

I had often been the social barrier that allowed Riz to open up at his own, slower pace. My patience for Trevor came from a sense of knowing he likely played a similar role for Mona.

“Hello, hello,” he beamed. “I was just telling Riz about the painting I made for Mona. It’s an abstract representation of what she means to me.”

“Oh, I’m so interested. Tell me more.” I could hear Riz let out the smallest sigh of relief. I placed my palm against his back and felt his body relax.

“Let me leave you both to that. I’m going to go find my sister,” he quickly strode away.

Trevor turned to me. “So what is Mona, right? That’s the question. She’s smart, beautiful. In a past life, she could have been an army commander. Even a king. That’s her energy. I’ve just been trying to figure out how capture all of that. You know?” He furrowed his brows.

“Well, did you?” I replied.
