Saloni thought she escaped her past. But right when everything seems to fall into place, she is forced to face an old enemy.

New to the story? Start here

The kitchen island was packed with presents. They had overtaken the space, pushing the appetizers and cake dangerously close to the edge.

“Why would anyone choose here, this place, to put them?” Mona mimed pushing the presents onto the ground by pressing her palms against the air. She gave me a look of exasperation before smiling at other guests that she knew less well.

I hovered over the island, trying to figure out where to place the tiny wrapped box of earrings I had purchased for her after careful selection.

“It all starts with one bad decision. Who was the first culprit?” I asked.

Mona pointed to a medium-sized box gift-wrapped with a design featuring wedding bells.

“The one that couldn’t even use event-appropriate paper.” She rolled her eyes.

I snorted. Though Riz would disagree, the siblings shared the same outwardly critical nature. In their hearts, they were fiercely kind.

“I can’t bear to think of my gift to you getting lost in all of this chaos.” I placed the small box in her palm and pulled her into a hug.
