A Short Story

“Let me get this straight. You’re angry with me because I believe in God?” Sanya asked. She sat across from her younger sister, Amira.

Amira sighed. Sometimes she wondered how two such different offspring had been produced by the same parents. “No. First of all, I’m not ‘angry’. I’m just talking in a passionate way because this is something I feel strongly about.”

“Then what are you, Amira?”

“I’m frustrated.”

“That’s not too far off from anger.”

“Like I said, not the same thing.”

Suddenly, the server interrupted them with a tray of their food. At least in this regard, both Sanya and Amira were the same. Neither could resist a juicy cheeseburger.

Amira watched her older sister stuff her face with a huge bite from the burger.

Sanya’s eyes were closed. She was thoroughly enjoying the mix of intricately seasoned meat, fresh tomatoes, aioli, and cheddar cheese. She waited patiently for her sister’s food-driven spiritual experience to end before saying, “This is a perfect example. That meat isn’t halal, but you’re still devouring it.”

Sanya furrowed her eyebrows and wiped her mouth. “I’m not perfect. No one is. I’m trying to be better.”
