unapologetic
a poem
one marigold afternoon
we strapped on our masks
and drove to the plant nursery.
green, wood, and soil
the possibility of growth
enraptured me
as I ambled through the aisles.
when we arrived back home
I carefully clasped the snake plant
between my eager hands
chosen
for its unapologetic beauty
vertical trajectory and sharp tip
its natural shape
beautiful and formidable.
after, I tended to our new cactus
and spent the next few minutes
tweezing unforgiving needles
from my hand.
